Crazy is the New Normal: HyperNormalisation

by O Society May 19, 2019

There are many different levels from which to look at our society, the media, and how it all works. Each of us has our own level of understanding, which is dependent upon how much time is spent in the kiddie pool and how much time is spent in the deep end.

That said, the thing which fascinates me is now we all have access to virtually unlimited amounts of information. Through our phones or computers or what have you. Anyone and everyone reading this is doing so on some sort of screen or printed out or something electronically majiggered to the internet.

So the expectation would be we all get smarter or more informed or wiser or intelligent or something because of this. Collectively. As a whole. We.

And yet if we lookit what’s happened, I’m not at all certain we’ve gotten smarter by being exposed to our smart phones 24/7.

It may well be what’s happened is all we’ve done is amplify the noise so loud, the average person has no idea what bits of the cacophony are worth listening to and perhaps even believes we’re listening to a symphony.

We’re overwhelmed by stimuli to the point of stupor.

Stupor? Yes, as in stupid. Stupefied.

The sound made by the aggregate of all this information makes us deaf. We can’t hear in these songs for the deaf what note is true because there’s so many goddam bees buzzing in circular logic flight patterns, the average American quite literally is not functioning at the level of critical thinking.

As in, the average – mean, median, mode, whatever – person in America cannot differentiate the true from the false on most subjects of science, politics, news, society, art, literature, etc whatever. From the top down.

This is the feeling I get whenever I “go on the internet” and look at the comments on public sites. Doesn’t matter much if it is YouTube or Facebook or Twitter or wherever. The vast majority is noise.

So the question is, what, if anything, is to be done about this?

Pissing in the ocean and expecting the whole thing to turn yellow just doesn’t work.

Putting a stream of “good” information out on the internet doesn’t seem to do much of anything, as it gets ignored while folks amplify the gibberish on their phones with volume on #11.

What’s to be done? Seriously? What can be done?

HyperNormalisation tells the extraordinary story of how we got into this strange time of great uncertainty and confusion – where those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed – and have no idea what to do.

Events keep happening, which seem inexplicable and out of control, from Donald Trump to Brexit, the War in Syria, the endless migrant crisis, and random bomb attacks.

The film explains why these chaotic events are happening and why we, and our politicians, cannot understand them.

The film shows what happened is all of us in the West – not just the politicians and the journalists and the experts, but WE OURSELVES – retreated into a simplified and often completely fake version of the world.
