Who is the _____ for?

by O Society May 5, 2020

One of our O Society people called Bob of Cabbages and Kings comments:

There is a question theories and ideologies of politics, economics, and policy only pretend to answer, or worse, lie about. It is a fill in the blank kind of question; “Who is the _________ for?”

Fill it in with “economy”, “election”, “safety net”, “welfare”, “medical system”, etc., and then look at what is really happening, and who are the winners and losers, and the invisible forgotten. Then, you will know.

The already broken is revealed and the fragile is shattered.

Bob’s question “Who is the ____ for?” is a specific formulation of the general question “Cui bono?” or in plain English, “Who benefits?”

The general question is typically answered with an imperative to “Follow the Money.” But what do we find when we follow the money specifically? Or more to the point, whomWho and What Are THEY?

The answer is there is an oligarchy/ plutocracy. How we define these oligarch people choosing some $ cutoff is a bit arbitrary: perhaps 1% or even 0.1%

The point is this is not some abstract concept. These are people with names, addresses, and phone numbers. For example, here is a list of 300 oligarchs:

The Global Power Elite: A Transnational Class

This class is no longer bound to national concerns, only to the expansion of its own power.

This transnational oligarchy class has a buffer of minions who secure the hegemony, as the plutocracy does not interface directly with the masses. The people in this buffer are not billionaires or olgarchs themselves, but we the people can and do interact with them.

The buffer are my brother-in-law who has a three story house, economics degrees, and is in charge of the HOA of the planned community he lives in, all white people, naturally. They have their own charter school, country club, sports leagues, etc for residents only. I wouldn’t trade places with him.

We can somewhat arbitrarily draw the line for these minions of conformity too: set it at 9% or 9.9%

It is important to note my brother-in-law would not call himself a “minion to the oligarchs.” He describes his life as “living the dream.” He drank the Kool-Aid so to speak and truly believes in Neoliberalism, Meritocracy, and Authority.

The truth is these ideologies all rest on a foundation of white supremacy that lies just below the surface. See The Conservative Moral Hierarchy

The bottom line is there is no American middle class any longer. No Class: Where Did the American Middle Class Go?

There is only the oligarchs and their minions versus the rest of us, the 90%. Here’s a more thorough explanation of our situation: The 9.9% is the New American Aristocracy

  1. Thanks for the mention. And, thinking of your brother-in-law, this came to mind:

  2. Of course there is a middle class. They’re the ones between poor and rich. The income level at which one is middle class changes over time, but there is always a middle class in a capitalist country.
